Why should I choose acupuncture?
As an Acupuncturist, my goal is to help you find the root cause of your symptoms, help you become more aware of your body's imbalances, improve your quality of life and prevent the onset of disease. The main components of my practice include Acupuncture, Tuina Massage, Cupping therapy and Medicated Diet. In my clinical experience, I have successfully treated patients with Chronic Fatigue, Stress, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Constipation, Insomnia, Anxiety, Depression, Pain and Loss of Sensation. Currently, I work as a Healthy Living Advisor at Rexall Pharmacy and provide treatments at the Bridgepoint Rehabilitation Centre in Toronto. I also provide NADA or Auricular acupuncture treatments at Lunch and Learns at The Halton Regional Police Service in Oakville and in private group settings by request to de-stress and detoxify.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture works by stimulating energetic points and activating channels to move Qi or energy in the body. Any blockages or stagnations of Qi in the body can cause imbalances that can lead to the onset of disease. These imbalances can be caused by a number of factors including stress, mental and physical overwork, improper diet, hormonal imbalances, lack of exercise, etc. With an in-depth look at your overall health, I use the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine to determine your constitutional pattern and develop a treatment plan for your individualized health condition.
Through her experience as a health promoter, she recognized the importance of nutrition in attaining optimal health and well-being. She went back to school to focus her studies in nutrition, and graduated with honours at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition, becoming a designated Registered Nutrition Consulting Practitioner. In addition, she earned her certification in Live Blood Cell Microscopy.
Riva is a committed practitioner who strives to empower others to take an active role in their personal health. She focuses on identifying and correcting the underlying causes of health concerns, and educating on diet and natural nutritional food supplementation to achieve optimal health and to prevent or manage many chronic diseases.
What is Live Cell Microscopy?
Live cell microscopy (LCM) is a blood screening technique that can detect imbalances that may not show up on traditional lab blood tests. By examining the quality of the blood, LCM offers a useful measure of the integrity of blood and immune cells, of nutritional deficiencies, and of the presence of toxins and pathogens.
Red and white blood cells, platelets and blood plasma are visible during LCM. When red blood cells are distorted in size or structure, they lack flexibility and fluidity. This causes their ability to flow freely to be compromised, and reduces their ability to efficiently transport oxygen. Misshapen blood cells are also indicative of deficiencies in essential nutrients, resulting either from a poor diet or from the body's inability to properly metabolize vitamins and minerals.
The number, size, shape and movement of white blood cells point to possible issues related to immunity, including infection, allergies, poorly digested (and therefore unusable and potentially harmful) foods, malnutrition and poor gut ecology. In the long term, over-activity or under-activity of immune cells can result in an increased susceptibility to illness.
The presence of "undesirables" in the blood plasma provides further information about potential problems. For example, viewing fat crystals in the blood suggests poor digestion of fats, a lack of essential fatty acids, and the potential for arterial plaque build-up; yeast or fungus suggests intestinal toxicity and a decreased resistance to microbes; protein threads, called spicules, suggest liver congestion resulting in the poor digestion and utilization of fats. Other stressors such as free radical damage, inflammation, parasitic activity and fungal forms are also visible.
The information revealed by LCM enables our Live Cell Analyst to provide each client with a comprehensive personalized protocol which includes lifestyle, dietary and nutritional supplement recommendations.
A follow-up appointment is recommended 8 – 12 weeks from the initial visit. At this time, improvements in blood quality are assessed, and further recommendations are offered to help maintain healthy blood and strong immune function.

Through manual therapeutic techniques, Krisjon Vargas, MS, CAT(C), our certified Athletic Therapist will be on the forefront of the Integrated Health and Science team that will assist with the assessment, prevention, immediate care, and reconditioning of musculoskeletal injuries. Prevention includes musculoskeletal and postural evaluation, functional movement assessment, muscular strength evaluation, equipment selection, fitting and repair, warm-up, conditioning programs, prophylactic or supportive taping, and adapting to the activity environment and facilities.

In the past, he has helped several athletes, post surgical and chronically injured, to reach their goals, whether they seek to return to the playing field or live pain free throughout the work week. He has been able to treat active lifestylers with chronic back pain and have them return to their sport pain free and at endure a higher level of performance. Also, he manages the healing process of various knee and elbow ligament reconstructions leading to a safe return weeks before the prognosis was determined. His success is grounded in treating the body as a whole unit, not segments of pain control. Every muscle, ligament and joint are connected, not only to each other, but through neurovascular and energy systems. As such, your whole body, from head to toe, is better able to cope with the rigours of activity and day to day life. To treat one is to treat all.
